Jean Gilles Lafouge
Domaine Lafouge was established in Auxey-Duresses in 1650. It was in 1986 when Gilles Lafouge joined his father that the domaine focused on bottling their own wine. Domaine Lafouge is definitely “under the radar” but is producing beautiful Burgundies that are superb values! It specializes in the production of Auxey-Duresses whites, reds, and 1ers Crus Climat du Val, La Chapelle, Les Duresses, and Les Ecusseaux. The family is regularly cited as one of the tops Domaines of the Appellation.
Even though Gilles has fully taken over the reins of the estate since 1990, his father, in typical Burgundian fashion is still around. Current holdings totaling 10 ha spread across the appellations of Auxey Duresses, Pommard and Meursault, more than 60% of his holding are over 50 years vines and the oldest vineyard is over 90 years old. Farming is sustainable with very logical approach to vineyard management in order to achieve pure and concentrated fruit. Hand-harvesting and wild-yeast fermentations of course, about 10 to 25% new oak, minimal batonnage for the whites and natural clarifications. Recent tastings with Gilles Lafouge have been fantastic, with the wines showing beautiful balance, especially in this very “classic” Burgundy vintage.
