” Wine tastes better with age because of a complex chemical reaction occurring among sugars, acids and substances known as phenolic compounds. In time, this chemical reaction can affect the taste of wine in a way that gives it a pleasing flavor.

Direct winery sourcing can be a great opportunity to purchase aged wines that have never left the cellar.

The deep dark ruby-colored 1999 is an excellent du Tertre. It exhibits aromas of herbs, leather, licorice, red and black currants, sweet fruit on the attack, medium body, and a round, charming, pretty finish.

The 2005 Nenin is a pleasant, chunky, monolithic style of Pomerol, with excellent density, purity, and earthy, spicy blackcurrant and black cherry fruit.

The strongest effort from Canon since 1982 and before 2009, the 2007 (75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dark ruby/purple color along with a beautiful bouquet of crushed rocks, boysenberries, blueberries, black raspberries, and licorice. The soft tannins, classic feel and texture, and medium to full-bodied, lengthy finish with no hard edges.

It is a backward, powerful, opaque purple-colored 2008 with fine acids, firm but sweet tannins, and thick, dense levels of attractive blackberry and cassis fruit intertwined with notions of underbrush, lead pencil shavings, and roasted herbs. It appears to be a denser, richer effort than some of the more lightweight Lynch Bages offerings of recent years.

This vintage again demonstrates what an extraordinary terroir La Mission-Haut-Brion possesses. It was not an easy year, with rain, flowering issues and uncooperative weather in the critical months of August and September, but the vineyard’s superb drainage and La Mission’s ability to produce fascinating aromatics even in difficult vintages triumphs again. Classic Graves aromas of charcoal, scorched earth, red and black fruits, truffles, graphite and melted tar emerge from this dark garnet/plum-colored 1994.
