Talking about the Vintages
1982 :
1982 Bordeaux wine is a historic year for a myriad of reasons. It was the first true vintage of the modern age ushering in a new style of Bordeaux wine. It was a long time coming. Not since 1961, 21 years earlier, had wines of this consistent level of quality been produced.
1992 :
1992 Burgundy red had an early bud break which was followed by an early but uneven flowering that had little effect on what would be a huge fruit set but did result in inconsistent maturities. A heat wave in early September ripened the abundant crop, producing high sugars, particularly in white, and low acidities.
2002 :
2002 Champagne is widely renowned as one of the greatest Champagne vintages of recent years, 2002 more than stands up to past greats such as 1996 and 1990. 2002 supplied near-perfect growing conditions, capped by fine, dry weather at harvest. The Champagnes have proven to be hugely age-worthy across the board, with exceptional, opulent fruit held in check by keen acidity. Considered an unusually concentrated year, the 2002 Champagnes combine power, richness and structure with impeccable balance.
2012 :
2012 Rhone had an exceptionally wet spring raised the threat from disease, particularly mildew. However, summer was warm and dry with just enough rainfall to hydrate the vines. August was mostly steady, bar some heat spikes, and September brought the cool nights and steady temperatures needed to complete ripening. The resulting wines tended to have a refined character with good balancing acidity and, although tannins were generally lower than normal, they tended to be finely integrated giving the top wines structure to age.
